HMS Whelp was one of eight W-class destroyers built for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Completed in 1944, the ship spent most of the war assigned to the Eastern and Pacific Fleets.

Prnce Phillip served continuously aboard the Whelp until 1946; after the Japanese surrender, when he returned home that year, The Welp had a top speed of 36.75 kts with geared turbines putting outover 40,000 shp. Armed with 4 siingle 4.7 inch, 20 and 40 mm AA guns and 21 inch torpedoes, Whelp was constructed by Hawhorne Leslie under the War Emergency Program. Whelp was sold tp the South Africa Navy in 1953.
