2016....PICTURE Left: RFA GOLD ROVER A271, and on her right the Type 23 frigate HMS LANCASTER F229 sailing together on Atlantic Patrol Task (South) duties. MoD. RFA GOLD ROVER first joined HMS LANCASTER in the Falklands Islands back in June 2015 during the unforgiving South Atlantic winter. Since then, the two Ships have sailed to warmer climates, crossing the Atlantic to the remote island of Tristan Da Cunha, then on to conduct a month long maintenance period in South Africa. From there, they sailed in company up the West Coast of Africa with stops including Angola, the British Overseas territory of St Helena, Ghana and Togo.
RFA Gold Rover was deployed to the South Atlantic, where she stood ready to support Royal Navy warships operating in the region and remained on task until 2017 when she came to the end of her service career. The Rover class is a British ship class of Small Fleet Tankers, active from 1970 to 2017 with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Two remain in service, one having been sold to Portugal and one to Indonesia; the three remaining have been scrapped or are awaiting disposal.
HMS Lancaster is a Type 23 Duke Class Frigate currently in service with the Royal Navy. There are 12 additional units that make up the class. The class will be replaced ship to ship with 5 Type 31E of the Inspiration class and currently the order stands at 8 Type 26 City Class Global Frigates.
