The Constellation class is a class of multi-mission guided-missile frigates under development for the United States Navy as a follow-on to the modular but problematic littoral combat ship. The contract is for twenty FFGs (Frigate-Guided Missile) built by Prime contractor Fincantieri began construction on the USS Constellation last August at its facility in Marinette, Wisconsin, and the construction process involves several approaches to reduce risk and contain costs.

The Constellation-class frigates will be used for various operations, including anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine, electromagnetic warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The first three will be named FGG 62 Constellation, FFG 63 Congress and FFG 64 Chesapeake.
