A Chinese sailboat dating from ancient times and still in use today. Junks were originally developed during the Han Dynasty (220 BC–200 AD) and were used as ocean going vessels as early as the 2nd century AD. They are still found throughout South-East Asia and India, but primarily in China, especially Hong Kong.

This picture is of Ha-Long Bay, Viet-Nam which is about 25 miles south of Hanoi. The boats are not true junks but replicas used to take tourists through the beautiful Ha-Long bay area. The only thing that is representative of a junk are the sails which in reality are much too small to power these ships, they are powered by diesel engines. They are well equipped with all the modern day amenities such as spacious air conditioned cabins. The trip is a definite plus should you ever go to Viet Nam. The tours are available for one day or overnight for two and three days, well worth it. I've been there several times and have taken this trip each time I visited that country.
